Ron & Carleton — Total Screen App Training
Chapters
- 1Opening0:00Recording consent, setting up the Mac screen capture, coffee, and a quick pricing-strategy chat about à-la-carte vs. bulk pricing.
- 2Building an Estimate4:44Dictating a full estimate into the app — customer, address, five window screens, size, mesh — then fixing the misheard quantity, adding a 20% neighbor discount, and sending it to FreshBooks.
- 3The Customer's View12:12What the emailed estimate looks like to the customer, the accept-and-scroll-to-read flow, the FreshBooks customer-account annoyance, and estimate view-tracking.
- 4Turning It Into a Job19:22Spinning the estimate off as a schedulable job, assigning and scheduling it, breaking out retractable work for the installer, and a quick call from Diana.
- 5Invoices & Photos26:05Why jobs stay internal to the app, sending invoices with the right due date and deposit, Google-Ads-vs-referral risk, and reviewing geotagged closeout photos for accountability.
- 6Measuring & Pricing34:28Measuring by perimeter instead of linear feet, the $12-per-foot rule, an anchor-then-discount pricing story, and a suspected off-the-books job.
- 7Referrals & Margins41:29Out-of-area referrals, the Turf Shade trademark, why window screens beat retractables on margin, and a personal aside about recognition.
- 8Open Source & Uploads47:54The app as an open-source product, phone measuring apps and ballpark measuring, pricing a friend's French-door job, and uploading geotagged photos — then wrap-up.

The full session is searchable — type a word or phrase to find where it's said, then click the timestamp to jump straight to that moment in the video. (The transcript isn't listed in full here.)
0:00Carleton I'm rolling here. Do I have your permission to record this?
0:03Ron Yes.
0:04Carleton Okay, cool. And then we'll also roll here, and I'll be able to make that super video that helps us at the end remember what we did and where.
0:11Ron Okay.
0:12Carleton Because those help me too. They remember, like, "Oh yeah, I didn't explain something very well." That's why we had to do it again, because I maybe missed something.
0:19Ron Mm-hmm.
0:27Carleton And then we'll also start the screen recording on yours as soon as you're logged in. All right. So I like to start screen recording with the universal search feature, which is Command and Space at the same time. And then whatever you're going to search for, just start searching. In this case, it'd be screen capture. I think it makes it two words though, screen space capture. Although screenshot was technically also correct.
0:58Ron Oh, yeah.
0:59Carleton That one is totally valuable.
1:00Ron Yeah.
1:01Carleton Just click that and it will open up this control set. We're going to choose Video, which is that one right there. Record the entire screen, and when there's options, we need to select them. I'm not sure why it's putting it, so... Oh, because it thinks you have two monitors still hooked up. It is still trying to display stuff on the full width of your two monitor setup. Even though everything's not up. Which is weird because it's not connected to the other display right now.
1:23Ron It's not connected. Yeah. It doesn't need to do that.
1:23Carleton So that's weird that it would have that default. Let's just pull that up and, well, you got it. MacBook Mo... That is important because without the microphone, we won't be able to sync these up later.
1:31Ron Mm-hmm.
1:32Carleton And show mouse clicks is also important, so we're good.
1:34Ron Okay. So we're good.
1:34Carleton But I think you have to pull this over now because I don't think we have the record button available.
1:39Ron There we go.
1:39Carleton Oh, there you go.
1:40Ron Yeah.
1:40Carleton Good job. And then you hit the record, and then we're good. Relatively. And then up at the top, yeah, I can see right there that means we're recording. It's like the little stop symbol that's on mine, too. If I press it, it stops the recording.
1:53Ron Okay.
1:53Carleton Okay. Synced up. All right. What can we work on? We'll do the same screen recording on there, too. Can I see that? We'll probably end up using your phone for some of this. New sync point. All right. Order coffee. Right? How much coffee have you had before you got here?
2:44Ron I just had a cup of mushroom coffee.
2:46Carleton Oh, nice. Yeah. Okay, I'm temporarily making auto lock five minutes longer instead of three.
2:59Ron Yeah. Yeah.
2:59Carleton So that way it doesn't stop the screen recording every five seconds. What do you want to work on?
3:06Ron Okay. So going back to that estimate I just did for the Suntex—
3:16Carleton Which—
3:16Ron On Fredricks.
3:17Carleton Okay.
3:18Ron Now you said you were going to be working on, um—
3:21Carleton I'm going to tell the app the right pricing, but for now you can override it with our logic.
3:25Ron Yeah. Well, I just did. I sent it out at the 150 one.
3:28Carleton No, no, it's fine. What you did is fine.
3:29Ron And I probably could have went 125 on the smaller window, because it's a lot smaller.
3:34Carleton You could, but I think at that point, that's a different level of pricing you're going to need to do. If you start making them à la carte—
3:42Ron Yeah
3:42Carleton … one of them is 150, one of them is 125, your bulk pricing goes out the window because now they're going to last for the specificity on why each one is that.
3:51Ron Okay.
3:51Carleton So I think there's a customer head space you get into—
3:54Ron Yeah
3:54Carleton … when you give them too much. So it doesn't really matter because in the future, if you use the app, it'll price them out for you anyway. You won't have to do that bulk—
4:03Ron Yeah
4:03Carleton … re-edit. So what's the next one? What do you want to work on?
4:09Ron Well, so if I'm going in to do a quote and I want to tell it—
4:15Carleton Okay. Yeah
4:15Ron … everything instead of the... The picture worked great. That's the second one I did.
4:18Carleton Good. I'm glad. Good. If it wasn't so late, I was going to message you and say—
4:22Ron Oh, okay. Yeah, I do appreciate—
4:24Carleton Genius. Man, I will really—
4:26Ron It's not that good
4:27Carleton … generally be able to respond to anything before 8:00 P.M. And generally after 8:00 A.M., I respond to stuff.
4:34Ron Yeah.
4:34Carleton In between, you will get me in a place where I'm not really head thinking for work, so I won't really be that useful.
4:40Ron No, no, that's understandable. Yeah. But yeah, I want to see when things are good, and I'm glad that it works.
4:44Carleton Let's do one that's all dictation. Is that the goal?
4:47Ron Yeah. Yeah.
4:48Carleton Let's open the Total Screen app, so wherever that is, and let's go to Estimates. Let's refresh it just to give it a hard restart. Let's try that one more time. It's like usually it refreshes when that... There we go. Now it's refreshing. Estimates. And let's do a new one. So there's a tab there. If you go back to Estimates, there's a tab. It says New.
5:18Ron Yeah.
5:19Carleton That'll be the way to start it. And when you tap in that area there, it'll bring up your keyboard. Press the dictation button—
5:26Ron Okay
5:27Carleton … and just lay into it. Now it needs specific things from you. It needs the email and the phone, or else it will not be able to send this estimate.
5:35Ron Right.
5:36Carleton So be ready with those—
5:37Ron Okay
5:37Carleton … and everything is good.
5:40Ron Create an estimate for Ron Dombroski, D-O-M-B-R-O-S-K-I, at 4615 Judson Way, La Mesa, California, 91942. Phone number 619-772-2952. Need five window screens, framed at color white, 48 by 62 in Suntex
6:09Carleton Does Ron have an email?
6:12Ron Email, r-o-n-s-t-e-r-r-o-c-k-s@yahoo.com.
6:19Carleton Let's try it. And then there's some times with the app where it's going to be not perfect. Like right now, it really should recenter to show you that it's working, but it just says—
6:34Ron Oh, yeah
6:34Carleton … hey. It should say, "Building your estimate." It makes you move it. It's not perfect yet for that.
6:39Ron Oh, that's okay. I can tell by that.
6:39Carleton There will be things that happen like that too. There will be things where you send a thing, and maybe the whole app will just go gray for a second. It's because it did it, but the message that it says it's successful is scroll up to up here.
6:50Ron Okay.
6:50Carleton So there's just problems right now with that, and sorry when that happens, but—
6:54Ron No, that's okay
6:55Carleton … they'll get better. And I've also made this. Last time we couldn't send these straight from the estimate generator. We had to go to FreshBooks to send them. We were able to make them in this estimator.
7:11Ron Yeah.
7:12Carleton They got sent to FreshBooks, but the customer wasn't able to get them from the estimate generator. Now there is a way to, from this app, send it to the customer as well.
7:22Ron Okay.
7:22Carleton So let's scroll down, see what it came up with for you. Let's verify the info looks correct, because your ground truth for your knowledge. It thinks you want 85, so at some point it misinterpreted your screening.
7:40Ron Mm-hmm.
7:40Carleton But let's change the quantity.
7:42Ron Mm-hmm.
7:43Carleton That's a good amount. That probably charged the right amount for that screen type.
7:48Ron Oh.
7:50Carleton That's—
7:50Ron Oh
7:50Carleton … that's okay. It's probably under... Actually, scroll down. It's still there. It did that thing where it shifted. So let's do edit one more time. That little edit—
8:00Ron Oh, right here.
8:00Carleton No, no, no, sorry.
8:01Ron Oh.
8:01Carleton I know. That's what I mean, there's two edit buttons.
8:03Ron Yeah.
8:03Carleton It's kind of confusing. It's this one right here, actually.
8:05Ron Okay.
8:06Carleton And then scroll down just a little bit and change that quantity from 85 to, I don't know, five. I think it's because it matches it. If you hit the check, it'll save it. Like with the blue check.
8:19Ron Oh, the blue checkmark.
8:20Carleton Yeah. Hold on. Cancel. And then that. There we go. That looks like a correct estimate for sun-related window screens that are nice. Now, you want to be nice to yourself? Let's give yourself a discount. What kind of discount do you think is a fair—
8:35Ron So they're- … fact?
8:36Carleton 310 each. That's what it's charging based on that math and what you told it. SunTex Mesh. That's a good price, by the way. That's what we should strive for, but we don't necessarily expect it. This is reasonable to get. You can get this. People are getting this in our company.
8:51Ron So- 310, because—
8:52Carleton 310
8:52Ron … the ones I just sold were 150 each.
8:54Carleton Correct, but that's because we didn't know the right way to do it—
8:56Ron Oh
8:56Carleton … and the linear footage was like whatever. So you can do anything. There's no knowledge of what these should cost. It's going to start them at this kind of pricing. So now if you want, you can add a discount. I think it's just a line. Oh, we were still in the edit mode. That's why. Add line item, discount. Discount, neighbor referral. And then, I think, is there a negative symbol? How do I do a negative? Not sure. Huh. Oh yeah, it's because it's only doing this keyboard. It doesn't give us a negative symbol. Can't change the keyboard. Okay, so that's an issue because when I've done it in the past, I've dictated it, so it's done it for me. So let's see if we can have it update here. Hold on. Add a 20% neighbor discount at the end of all of it. It should just do everything exactly the same as it did before, remake it, and now add that discount. There will be some homeowners who won't need that discount, so we don't start with it. There will be some who are knowing that the thing is solving their problems so much that they already agree to the value proposition.
10:21Ron Mm-hmm.
10:22Carleton So we don't start with it at the lowball price because that doesn't make a business possible.
10:26Ron Okay.
10:28Carleton You're doing great. Pricing is great. It can only go up and that's only going to benefit everyone.
10:33Ron Mm-hmm.
10:33Carleton All right. Let's see. Will you scroll? Let's check. It changed the number again, but that's okay because last time we manually changed it.
10:45Ron Oh yeah.
10:45Carleton So let's edit it back down to five. That's giving us more experience for fixing that. Cool. And then, yeah. All right, that new one. Let's save this and send it to you now. Scroll down a little more. Send to FreshBooks. Once it's sent to FreshBooks, that's good, and it's going to ask you a few things every time just to make sure you really wanted to do it. It's like confirming that that's truly an action you wanted to take because it actually makes things happen on FreshBooks in a nutshell when you confirm that. So it could technically create confusion if you were doing a test that wasn't clearly labeled—
11:19Ron Yeah
11:19Carleton … or something.
11:19Ron Yeah.
11:19Carleton This is fine because it's your name. Now, what we want to do is... What were we going to do after this? We made the estimate. We knew the discount was there, right? We want to send it to the customer.
11:34Ron Send it, yeah.
11:35Carleton Okay, because that was the thing we had to do last time.
11:37Ron Oh, okay.
11:37Carleton We had to go manually to FreshBooks to do this. Now it's just press this button. And then check your email.
11:54Background Hey. Hi, guys. I'm Jerry. I'm home.
12:00Carleton Looks like we're wearing pagoda hats on this QuickTime video.
12:07Background I am going to buy a box of Fig Newtons
12:12Carleton Sometimes FreshBooks stuff goes straight to garbage because it comes from FreshBooks first.
12:17Ron There it is.
12:17Carleton Oh, good. It came from Total Screen. Let's look at it. Okay, now take a look.
12:21Ron Oh, yeah. Speaking of where it comes from, so if I send into somebody an estimate, what—
12:26Carleton Let's look at it
12:27Ron … let's see here.
12:28Carleton Yeah. Click that where it says Total Screen Via. That should show you the email. Or maybe it's above it. There it is. Sent to me. So it's that email account—
12:37Ron Oh
12:38Carleton … that's sending it. But it says—
12:39Ron Okay
12:39Carleton … it's from Total Screen, so at the very least—
12:41Ron Okay
12:41Carleton … they knew the name to look for. Most people know this as Total Screen.
12:45Ron Okay.
12:48Carleton Okay, so that's what it looks like to them, and you can see right there. Let's view it, and we'll actually get the knowledge that you've now viewed this estimate. So this is what a customer sees, too. So you're getting that full-on.
13:00Ron Yeah, that's all. Yeah. Yeah. It's perfect.
13:01Carleton Okay. And then if they really like it, they can press that button and say, "Yep, perfect." Scroll to the bottom to accept. Yeah, we make them read it. They have to know what they're accepting, otherwise they could accept on something they said, "Well, I didn't read that." So now we force them to say, "If you don't scroll, you haven't read it." But then go ahead and accept it. We'll go through the whole process in this.
13:26Ron It says accept and then save? That's weird. I've never seen this.
13:29Carleton Let's try it again. Hit save. Oh, I forgot they did that. God, I hate them. FreshBooks is not satisfied with their business being what it is, so now when they get emails sent to other people, they're doing this shit to them. No one needs a FreshBooks account that's a customer.
13:50Ron Right.
13:51Carleton That's so obnoxious of this company.
13:53Ron That is.
13:53Carleton We're paying to do that.
13:54Ron Yeah.
13:54Carleton That's going to create customer confusion—
13:56Ron That's very confusing
13:56Carleton … and all it makes me want to do is remove FreshBooks from our system and make it more holistically this, which is what I'm working toward. And my end goal is that everything might run on FreshBooks behind the scenes, but FreshBooks—
14:10Ron Yeah
14:10Carleton … is never shown to a customer, and we don't even interact with it. It's just a data repository that's keeping this app from being slowing down. Because—
14:18Ron Yeah
14:18Carleton … if I try to do everything on a single app, it makes the website slow, it makes the system slow. That's where we are.
14:23Ron Yeah. If I was a client, I'd be like, "I'm not opening up this account."
14:26Carleton Yeah. And frankly, now we know.
14:27Ron Yeah.
14:28Carleton Don't tell people to... Tell people not to accept it.
14:30Ron I'll let them know I can accept it.
14:32Carleton That's what you should do.
14:33Ron That's what I did last time.
14:33Carleton Tell me when you want that accepted, and I'll do it.
14:35Ron Yeah.
14:35Carleton That'll avoid you from having to have that customer get confused.
14:38Ron Yeah.
14:38Carleton Because that could really create confusion in an older customer. In any age, frankly.
14:41Ron Yeah.
14:41Carleton So now we've seen that, we can avoid it. It is still good to get the acceptance, and they need to know how much they've accepted. So if, for example, if the text message, if they say they accept the estimate, in that text message thread, you have to have told them that price in the thread. That way, we have proof they responded to the price that we're saying to them, if we're doing it informally like we're describing here. Because this is official—
15:08Ron Yeah
15:08Carleton … but it's annoying.
15:08Ron That's a bummer.
15:09Carleton So I don't want that.
15:09Ron Because that's a really great—
15:11Carleton I don't want that
15:11Ron … convenient feature.
15:12Carleton Yeah. We'll make it better in the future when—
15:14Ron Yeah
15:14Carleton … it's all on our app. Because I can do—
15:16Ron Yeah
15:16Carleton … basically FreshBooks myself and run it. Okay. Let's look at your estimate. Probably have to refresh. Oh, did you use the phone a second ago? Like call someone?
15:31Ron No.
15:31Carleton Let's connect to the WiFi or the phone's WiFi. That's why. Has it been manually needing to be connected, or does it automatically—
15:44Ron Well, at home, it—
15:45Carleton At home, it probably goes straight to your—
15:46Ron At home, it connects to my... Yeah. Yeah.
15:54Carleton That's weird. It shouldn't be. It shouldn't be limited in that way. Oh, personal hotspot is off. Hold on a second.
16:16Ron Huh. So that must've been my iPhone you were trying to join?
16:22Carleton No, mine wouldn't show up to you. Turn your WiFi off as well, and then back on.
16:35Ron I just maybe took off the other one.
16:38Carleton Oh, no, it's trying to get mine. So cancel. Let's try again to join the iPhone. Let's try it.
16:51Ron Oh, it is showing 5G now before it wasn't.
16:54Carleton Good. All right. Now that should be you because it's showing the little handshake.
16:59Ron All right.
17:00Carleton Oh, click it one more time.
17:03Ron I just know, like, I tapped it before.
17:07Carleton So now we'll see what happens. Super. All right. Let's refresh FreshBooks. Type fine sentence. And we're going to look at that estimate you just accepted, because we, on FreshBooks and on the Total Screen app, can see what behavior customers have had on our estimates we've sent. So let's go to estimates. I don't care about that. I was talking right down.
17:35Ron Cool.
17:36Carleton And I'll fix the app. It's still not putting your initials. I'll fix that. I'll get it fixed, because it should say RD there.
17:41Ron Oh, yeah. And then accepted.
17:43Carleton Cool. Let's look at it. Up at the top here in this area is where we see the timeline. Click this green banner. Okay. So see, now we see when you looked at the estimate right after we sent it.
17:54Ron Oh, cool.
17:54Carleton This is useful for you to know how to find this data. It will be accessible on the app as well. There's a tracking ability on this.
18:01Ron Yeah.
18:01Carleton But for now, you can look here when you want to see, did they get my estimate? Did they see it? Because we can see sent all day, but it doesn't matter if they don't say viewed.
18:10Ron Yeah.
18:11Carleton For example, if you only viewed the email and didn't click through, you wouldn't have seen the itemization, and I don't even know that you would've got more than the price. Maybe not even the price.
18:22Ron No, the price is in the email, right? That you got?
18:25Carleton Yeah. Because it wouldn't be that useful if you were a customer to say yes to an estimate. That's the one you clicked through. Go back to the original email. Okay, so see, that is what they get. How could they ever accept anything based on that?
18:43Ron Right.
18:44Carleton If this says sent, but not viewed, they haven't seen what we're trying to communicate to them. They haven't seen the itemization. They've only seen the total price. So sometimes that does encourage them to stop talking to us.
18:58Ron Right.
18:59Carleton They see a price, they don't go any farther, even clicking the link. That happens. So sometimes Geoff emails those people and says, "Hey, did you get the estimate?" Then he sees them go and manually do it. Geoff does that.
19:10Ron Okay.
19:10Carleton He sees it. Because that happens, how many people just see the price, get sticker shock, and like, "Fuck it. It was a free estimate anyway." So now let's say this is a job we want to do. Let's just say it's an actual job. Let's go to Apps, Estimates, Open. Let's do Open. And let's refresh it because maybe it hasn't pulled yours in yet. There we go. Let's click yours, and then it should bring up that window info. Now I'm curious. I want to send this as a job. Here we go. Send that as a job. This is a new thing we're trying right now. And it might not be perfect because I haven't done any of this before. What I want is all these things to be pre-included. And because I'm making a video of this, this becomes like troubleshooting for the app. I just say, "Hey, take a look at this video. See what we didn't get perfect." I'm going to say this is going to you. And I'm going to say, "Please help Ron and remember to make sure his gate stays closed because he has pets." And now what this will do is create a separate job that's just for you. Now, technically, it doesn't need to be just for you, but in the case of a job that had window screens that Geoff is going to install, but a retractable that the installer is going to install, I want to break off that retractable component as a job. So that way it's a known set of things that now can be acted on by... If you were the installer, in that case, got the retractable job, you'd go to Jobs and look at what was required of you. So future, past, one of these should show something. This is your job, and if we'd had a time, it would show there, Scheduled, this time, this date. And again, this is all in a tab that would be only for your jobs—
21:03Ron Mm-hmm
21:03Carleton … and you would cycle through it. It's not perfect yet. I'm developing this. This is so walking through mud right now in certain ways.
21:11Ron Yeah.
21:11Carleton We're not knowing what we're doing. I'm just pretty sure this is a way we can get everyone on the same page in a big organization. Big eight people. Everything about the job would be present for you, and if we knew the time, let's go ahead and schedule it for whenever. Now it's actually scheduled, so technically, that is going to be a thing that will help the other people know, "Oh, there's a job scheduled at 12 on the 19th. Ron is not available for that time. He's got a job scheduled." That'll automatically start to populate on calendars when we fill this out.
21:41Ron Mm-hmm.
21:42Carleton It's about not duplicating our effort. If we've ever entered a time and date for a scheduled appointment, that should just propagate out to other people in the app however they need to know it. It shouldn't be we have to re-input data in more than one place. I think that's a waste of our time. And it's likely to get mistranscribed one of those times, so it's like do one thing every time. If you were doing this job and you said, "I'm done now," pretending we're the installer again, "Oh yeah, you're done? Well, prove that you did it. Take a picture of the work." Great. That's the finished job you did. And it's tagged to the location we knew you had to be at. So if you show us a photo that's not tagged to location, maybe it wasn't there. Maybe you sent us an old photo. I don't know.
22:24Ron Yeah.
22:25Carleton Maybe you're trying to scam us, is what it tells me at that point, when there's no geo-provenance.
22:30Ron Mm-hmm.
22:31Carleton In that moment, if I were the person doing that small component of a larger FreshBooks job, it just got officially done. Everyone can check on it if they were in this team, looking at this thing together, and they'd know that that component is finished. So that's really useful in the big picture when we have these moments when people are contacting each other on the team saying, "Did you finish this part for this guy? Did you finish that part for that guy?" And that's all—
22:56Ron Yeah
22:56Carleton … opportunities for bad experiences to happen on the customer's end if we drop the ball but don't know who was responsible for picking it back up. And then that—
23:05Ron I'm going to hit Close Out, whatever that means
23:07Carleton … that would be under Invoices? Actually, no, because technically a job... Well, actually, yes. Let's look, because we're learning this as we go. What I kind of did was make a whole job out of that whole estimate—
23:20Ron Yeah
23:20Carleton … treating it as a whole thing, not a component, doing it separately. I haven't found FreshBooks Search to work that well in that regard.
23:27Ron Oh, okay.
23:27Carleton It's so comprehensive, it just doesn't... Wow, you're in there three times. So one of those might not be the right one. Same. My suggestion is if you're going to search for something on FreshBooks, Invoices or Estimates, whichever. Excuse me. And then just this simple one—
23:48Ron Oh, okay
23:49Carleton … that's the one to use. Yeah. I keep forgetting. Oh, I just saw one, Install It Direct.
24:02Ron That's my old company.
24:03Carleton Well, that's probably why your name's coming up.
24:05Ron Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yep, it's not coming up on—
24:09Carleton Oh, well we're on Invoices. We haven't sent one yet. But hey, that is the next step the app is going to be able to do, which will be estimates that have been finished, like a job. If that job is complete, we should have that invoice sendable. That should be a system we take care of. Oops. All right, so let's say you're going to send an invoice now, because we know it's been accepted. More actions And this is something I'll eventually make possible in the app, but today it is not. Convert to invoice. And that's it. Actually, that's not it. Verify that it's correct. Verify if you're changing anything, it needs to be documented here. Just go ahead and save it at this point. Don't send it. Save it. Now what you've done is you've entered the invoice as a draft that just sits pleasantly in the invoices until the day we start to... Oh, Diana's calling. Want to talk to her?
25:08Ron Hey, Diana.
25:09Diana Oh, hi. How are you? Did I catch you at a bad time?
25:11Ron No, I'm actually with Carleton doing some training.
25:13Carleton Hi, Diana, right next to you.
25:13Diana What? Say that again. You're with Carleton and what?
25:18Ron We're doing some training, having some Starbucks.
25:21Diana Oh, some training. Oh, good. Yep. So I'm here, too. Do you know if you've gotten any messages from Estes—
25:25Ron I did
25:26Diana … about delivery?
25:26Ron Yep, the delivery's in.
25:28Diana You did?
25:28Ron Yep.
25:29Diana Oh, did you forward it to anyone, or can you forward it to me?
25:32Ron No.
25:32Carleton He just learned five minutes ago to forward it to you from me. So we're still in that part of the meeting.
25:38Diana Oh, okay. Yeah, I'll go try to bring it up.
25:39Ron Yep, I have a number for you, a tracking number if you want.
25:42Diana Oh, I have the tracking number.
25:44Ron Okay. All right. Yeah, 22084. Yeah.
25:48Diana Yep. That's the end of it. Yeah. Okay.
25:52Ron Awesome. All right. Thank you. Bye.
25:54Diana Thank you. Have a good day.
25:56Ron You, too. Bye.
25:56Diana Bye.
25:58Carleton I'm going to restart the screen recording because that canceled it.
26:05Ron Cool.
26:06Carleton So now we got the premise of a little bit of how that concept of you could take an estimate, break a part of it or all of it off and do a job, and none of that affects anything on FreshBooks. It doesn't even get shown to someone on FreshBooks if the job is getting worked on.
26:19Ron Mm-hmm.
26:20Carleton Jobs are internal with the app. They're a figment that those who have the app can see.
26:26Ron Mm-hmm.
26:26Carleton But they don't exist in FreshBooks. They don't exist in Nutshell meaningfully. That's not true. They do exist in Nutshell, but you'll never see it if you don't log into Nutshell. And ideally, you don't have to log into Nutshell the more I make this app functional. I'd like to avoid us logging into multiple services in a day. I'd like this to do it all.
26:42Ron Okay.
26:43Carleton That's where we're getting. It's going to take some time, and what we have done is everything that we would normally do for a job from start to finish. If you were going to install bronze today, you would actually send the invoice to them today, the same day you install, and say, "We do a 50% deposit." If they hadn't already paid it, that would be in advance. But—
27:05Ron Mm-hmm
27:05Carleton … in this case, we'd be like, "Whatever. Just pay the whole thing on the day."
27:08Ron Okay.
27:08Carleton But then you send it the day you're installing it. That's the job, so that they get it fresh in their mind, and they—
27:14Ron Okay
27:14Carleton … understand the day is due on day we install. That's also indicated on our invoices.
27:20Ron Okay.
27:21Carleton But be aware... Let's click the invoice, actually. The one for you. And what we're going to see is the due date is actually set to a month away or more. So if you want to back up your claim that it's due on the day you install it, change that due date to that day. It's not going to automatically know to do that. It's going to have a set amount of days it gives as every set of time. So—
27:48Ron Okay
27:48Carleton … you manually making it look that level of closed out and professional is what the salesperson does.
27:54Ron Okay.
27:55Carleton They really do the little things that back up what we're asking for, which is that this is documented. Like, "Here's a day you're doing the paying of our company." Because there's sure not much recourse for taking stuff back if they don't pay. We left. We're not getting it back. We're not getting our time back. We're not getting the materials back. They just stole from us at that point, and we have to absorb that. So we want to avoid that, because it's easy. And technically, the Google Ads people are more likely to do it than the referrals, because the referrals are people we already have trusted and they got referred to. But a Google Ad is literally anyone, Tom, Dick, and Harry, that chose to search a word, and we got shown to them. So we don't have any built-in equity to them. We are a coin toss to them. They don't care about us. And—
28:44Ron So—
28:45Carleton Yeah, we have to do more work to get a Google Ads lead to close, just because they don't trust us as much, and they don't have—
28:50Ron Yeah
28:50Carleton … much vetting of us.
28:51Ron So always try to get a deposit?
28:54Carleton Anything over $1,000.
28:56Ron Okay.
28:56Carleton If it's over $1,000, that's what our estimate says here.
28:58Ron Even if it's under, why can't we get a deposit? Then we at least have—
29:00Carleton I wouldn't waste the time, because it's a lot of rigmarole. Until it's a couple clicks, I wouldn't waste the time. It's technically a thing that is a detriment to certain people to do, so it will actually make the job not go through because it's a thing they won't do.
29:12Ron Okay.
29:13Carleton So it's like if they don't do that one step to make the job move forward, the half deposit on a $600 job, we just won't do the job because they won't do it. That's what I've experienced, and that's why we picked 1,000 as our breaking point.
29:24Ron Okay.
29:24Carleton But eventually it'll be easier, and it'll all be in an app, and that'll be the way we do it.
29:28Ron Okay.
29:28Carleton What else? Oh, wait. Let's send that. Send that to yourself. So now you get another example of how it looks on these invoices when we send them.
29:47Ron So does it automatically plug in the bill then—
29:50Carleton It will set—
29:51Ron … or do I need to fill it in?
29:52Carleton Anything that is blue—
29:53Ron Yeah
29:53Carleton … will automatically, dynamically pull that info.
29:56Ron Oh, perfect.
29:57Carleton Anything that is blue. And then all of that is very upfront. They see it in the email even, not in that click-through version. They see this in the email they get. So that one—
30:07Ron Yeah
30:07Carleton … that they didn't even interact with, they'll see that. So you have that recourse. "Please pay us with Zelle at that phone number."
30:13Ron And whose number? This is the office number?
30:14Carleton It goes straight to Diana's number, I think, or maybe it's one of Kathie's.
30:20Ron Oh, okay. Okay, cool.
30:20Carleton Yeah. I don't remember. But yes, we generally only ask for it over $1,000.
30:26Ron Okay.
30:27Carleton But definitely do it if it's over $1,000 because we need that pre-commitment for us.
30:32Ron Yeah.
30:32Carleton Not even to buy materials, just for us to prove that this person has skin in the game And then I think you can't see it because the screen is so large. You can actually make fonts smaller with Command and minus, and then more can fit on your screen.
30:47Ron Yeah. Okay.
30:48Carleton Yeah. And Command plus will make it bigger again.
30:51Ron Oh, okay.
30:52Carleton Yeah.
30:56Ron And then how do we go in and see the pictures, the picture you took of the example of the finished product?
31:05Carleton For which type of product?
31:06Ron Well, you just took a picture of this to put in there that the—
31:12Carleton Oh yeah, the job
31:13Ron … part of it was installed.
31:14Carleton Yeah. Well, let's pretend I'm looking at you as the job person. I don't know if I'll be able to. Hold on. Okay. So let's see. Can I see the job you just completed? I am curious. Well, I'm an admin, so I theoretically can. Past. Okay, this one. If I were you looking at a job the installer just did, here's everything you did on the job.
31:58Ron Oh.
32:03Carleton This is the closeout photo.
32:05Ron Mm-hmm.
32:05Carleton So in this point, you would be... See how the detail is present? It's pretty good to zoom in. You could check corners of the door frame to see if there's caulk, if there's dirt. If there's—
32:18Ron Yeah
32:19Carleton … evidence we did a slap dash.
32:20Ron Like a walkthrough of it.
32:22Carleton That is it. Virtual walkthrough. It's as close as we can get to accountability for someone who is far away from the person.
32:28Ron Yeah.
32:31Carleton And in the future, this will have even more details about what was done, but the fact that it got finished is all there is. In that case, we know what it got done, and it got done because it's there. So I'll make this even better in the future so we see an installed door one, installed door two, if it were—
32:47Ron Right
32:47Carleton … not like you could get it time-wise because the installer's not going to be doing that. Like, "Okay, I installed door one." He's not going to do it.
32:53Ron Yeah.
32:53Carleton He's not going to do it that level of one-to-one, but at the end when he takes the photos, we certainly know when he finished the job. There's a definite concrete level of you can't take the finished photo before the job is finished.
33:06Ron Yeah.
33:06Carleton So we know the time he uploaded that photo is close to the time it was likely finished.
33:12Ron Okay.
33:14Carleton And we'll be developing that. You and me are going to get really good at making this thing functional so that when I hand the function of the app over to the installer, we are the experts to know how it works.
33:25Ron Yeah.
33:26Carleton He's going to try to blame his levels of not doing something right on this, so I'm trying to get in front of that—
33:33Ron Yeah
33:33Carleton … and make it unassailable that there's just a couple things he has to do and press a couple buttons, and the buttons work. Because he's going to make all sorts of claims. This is the type of person he is. He's going to make claims that limit his liability.
33:46Ron Yeah.
33:46Carleton "I didn't do that." That was the thing of this.
33:48Ron Yeah. Okay.
33:48Carleton So just knowing that is enough to make it a non-issue now.
33:51Ron Okay.
33:52Carleton I learned not to ask him questions if I can avoid it. I'd rather tell him things. I'd rather tell him things rather than give him a chance to make up a figment that I don't have to know if it's true or not. That's what this picture is—
34:04Ron And is he active at all—
34:06Carleton … that's what this picture's about
34:06Ron … in taking a final picture or—
34:08Carleton Not yet. We haven't really asked him to do it yet.
34:10Ron Okay.
34:10Carleton That's why this is going to be a thing we start to figure out first—
34:13Ron Okay
34:13Carleton … and then make sure he knows how to do. Because it's really just I want to ask him to do one extra thing on his job.
34:19Ron Yeah.
34:19Carleton That's it. That's my goal. It's not really a big change, just the ability to do the thing and be the contributing team member we need. What else?
34:28Ron Also when you're calculating linear footage, if you're—
34:33Carleton Yes
34:34Ron … trying to get that multiple, are you going width times height, or is it just the bottom?
34:42Carleton Well, if it's linear—
34:43Ron Or what are you measuring?
34:44Carleton It's the perimeter. The whole perimeter. Think about perimeter. Instead of linear feet—
34:47Ron Okay
34:47Carleton … think about measuring perimeter.
34:48Ron Okay.
34:48Carleton Geoff and I had this conversation today. I think there's lots of nomenclatures we could get hung up on, linear feet, square feet, perimeter. Figuring out what word means the same thing is important.
34:58Ron Yeah.
34:58Carleton So perimeter measuring is what we do. If this table was what we're measuring, let's say it's two feet by three feet.
35:08Ron Yeah.
35:08Carleton All right. Six feet, four feet total, 10 feet on its perimeter. That's the same as 10 linear feet.
35:17Ron Yeah.
35:17Carleton Technically, it's the same as 10 square feet in the way you might think about it. So that's why those headspaces of what word we're calling it doesn't matter so much as knowing what we're measuring.
35:25Ron So you measure just the entire window frame. Yeah.
35:27Carleton You measure the perimeter and—
35:28Ron Yeah
35:28Carleton … and that holds up for almost everything. It wouldn't hold up at certain scales, like very large screens, but that's okay because we already have our cost of materials covered.
35:37Ron Oh, good.
35:38Carleton It's not exactly linear, our cost to size, but that equation will cover you. So yeah, just do perimeter. Think about that. Perimeter measurements is how you get numbers.
35:49Ron That's understandable.
35:50Carleton And it's really easy, too, because if that number is... I think Geoff and I came up with today a nice easy number to know it's going to be good. If it's Suntex, $12 per perimeter foot.
36:00Ron Okay.
36:01Carleton It's going to be in the app soon. It's going to be dynamite, and it's going to be easy, but $12 per perimeter foot on that—
36:07Ron Oh, that's good for me especially—
36:08Carleton … on that 10 foot—
36:09Ron Yeah, especially for me
36:09Carleton … if it were this size—
36:10Ron Yeah
36:10Carleton … what would that be? It would be $100.
36:13Ron Yeah.
36:13Carleton No, that'd be $120. $12 per perimeter foot—
36:17Ron Yeah
36:17Carleton … if we know this is 10 perimeter feet. 120 bucks. That's exactly almost what you were saying the small one should cost, right?
36:26Ron Yeah.
36:26Carleton Isn't this kind of that size?
36:28Ron Yeah. It's a little bit longer, yeah.
36:29Carleton So we're in that right head.
36:30Ron Yeah.
36:31Carleton We're in there. Use 12 and you'll be happy. This thing will get you to 15 or 20, and you can discount it. They're all good.
36:37Ron Yeah.
36:38Carleton I think one of the reasons that M3500 went for the guy in Capistrano, despite your selling, I'm sure that helped, he saw a high price first from us. He saw 28 per unit first for about 10 minutes, then he sat with that, then we hit him with a discount of 1,500.
36:53Ron Yeah.
36:53Carleton That was like a crazy mind fuck. Like, that might be like— We didn't mean to do it … really?
36:58Ron Yeah.
36:59Carleton But that was how that probably felt. Well, he knew what his friend paid.
37:04Ron Oh, how much did he pay?
37:05Carleton They paid 19.
37:07Ron Oh, that's good to know. Not from us.
37:09Carleton Yeah.
37:09Ron Really?
37:10Carleton Yeah. Where do they live? Do you want water?
37:12Ron Uh.
37:13Carleton Where do they live?
37:14Ron Uh—
37:14Carleton Why are we up in Capistrano?
37:16Ron No, no. It's Anil.
37:20Carleton Okay. Well, I'm sure glad we charged more than they paid.
37:24Ron Yeah.
37:25Carleton That's important. And then I think you have to go to invoices or estimates. It's like all the way over. Oh, there. Invoice. No, that can't be it. No, she had a couple. Yeah, and you know, here's the thing. Let's click this. Let's get into this can of worms. I really have a feeling that we did this job already. Find out if we did.
37:50Ron Yeah. She's all done. Yeah.
37:52Carleton Okay. But here's—
37:52Ron Oh, this one—
37:53Carleton But take a look … I'm not sure about.
37:54Ron Okay.
37:54Carleton Well, 7/9, uh. It was recent.
37:58Ron Oh.
38:00Carleton I don't know about this. Yeah, he did add one on here. Because when it's the installer's, I get concerned when it sits in draft. Because I get concerned that maybe he's trying to help them outside of the company and ask for payment on Venmo or Zelle or something like... These are the ways I'm worried about the installer doing things independently, if I see a job just sitting somewhere with no one on it. But I don't think that's that far ago. Like that's today. Right?
38:26Ron No, we're in August, so.
38:28Carleton Oh, okay. So what I'm concerned about now then is that he stole. I'll be really clear. I'm concerned he went to this customer, did the job, we gave him the materials, we gave him all the ability. He showed up in his truck, he took the total screen magnets off, and when this customer asked how to pay, he said, "Just send a Venmo payment to the installer." That's me speculating. He might not have done that—
38:50Ron Yeah
38:50Carleton … but he has done it, so we know it's possible. So, to me, this is a huge red flag.
38:56Ron Yeah.
38:57Carleton But maybe it's because we didn't have the Serene Screen in stock. Let's click and see. Let's click the estimate. Maybe there's details on that. Scroll down.
39:12Ron Yeah.
39:13Carleton I don't know. I don't like any of it. But if this is a person we've helped, we should find out if you go back one to the invoice for this—
39:22Ron Mm-hmm
39:23Carleton … if this got installed. Because if it got installed, that means the installer did steal. Because why wouldn't the invoice be sent? The reason it's not sent is because if he took payment for it, he doesn't want another follow-up from the company about it. And if I'm wrong about all this, that's fine—
39:41Ron Yeah
39:41Carleton … but I want us to know that it's possible that this can happen rather than just be like assuming everything is on the level when it involves the installer.
39:49Ron So I wonder where all the other job we did, because we did—
39:53Carleton Well, like I said—
39:53Ron … we did for a large 3,500 solar
39:54Carleton … I recommend not using that Clients section. Just go to Invoices and search the customer's name. When it brings you to Clients it's a goose chase. Nope.
40:02Ron Oh, jeez. I keep wanting to go—
40:04Carleton I know. That's the search
40:05Ron … back.
40:06Carleton Look for the word search.
40:06Ron Thank you.
40:07Carleton Yeah.
40:07Ron I know, but...
40:08Carleton I know. Look, I've been doing this for a while, so I'm already there. And even then, it's not going to be perfect. You'll get stuff that's not relevant. Here it is.
40:18Ron All right.
40:20Carleton Good. We did charge a good amount. We charged the right-ish amount, which is surprising because normally we didn't, but maybe someone told him to charge that much. Good.
40:32Ron Yeah. So then I was at 2,100 each.
40:34Carleton Good. Yeah, I saw that.
40:35Ron And then I says, "Well, I could get you closer—"
40:37Carleton Yeah
40:37Ron … "to her," and I did 2,000.
40:39Carleton I think you did a great job—
40:40Ron Because of the distance, too
40:41Carleton … and it's going to make more money than they normally do for us.
40:44Ron Yeah.
40:44Carleton But that's not— That's not your average job by any means … you're getting us to parity with what we should be getting finally. Like truly, you're getting us to that level where now we can build on. Because right now we've been just trying to... The sales team has just been lacking evidence they can get more, so they haven't been trying. They have evidence they can get more—
41:03Ron See, I don't know any better
41:04Carleton … they now will try better. I know. That's my point.
41:06Ron Yeah.
41:06Carleton I want you to set these trends because they have these anchor biases set by Geoff, set by each other.
41:12Ron Yeah.
41:12Carleton All that. And those aren't helpful when we know we can get more, especially when it's going to be easy with the estimate generator. Just be like, "Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop. You can have all this stuff—"
41:21Ron Yeah.
41:21Carleton "… and I'll make a discount, and you'll be happy."
41:24Ron Cool.
41:25Carleton What else?
41:30Ron So, along with the San Juan Capistrano one, I've given my friends a estimate—
41:38Carleton Good
41:38Ron … in Mission Viejo, because if we're—
41:40Carleton Oh yeah, you're already there
41:40Ron … it's very close.
41:41Carleton We won't be able to continue this, though. There's a problem here.
41:47Ron Yeah.
41:47Carleton Do you see it? We're going to do a great job up there.
41:51Ron Yeah.
41:51Carleton They're going to want us back.
41:52Ron Yeah.
41:52Carleton That's a problem when I'm not willing to put Capistrano on our dock.
41:56Ron Yeah.
41:57Carleton So let's just make it clear to these people— The only reason I approved that with Geoff that—
42:01Ron Yeah
42:01Carleton … because it was a referral. He's always going to say yes to a Geoff.
42:03Ron Oh, okay.
42:04Carleton Geoff's headspace is, "Yes," if it's money.
42:08Ron Yeah.
42:08Carleton So if you say, "Hey, I got this opportunity, it's in San Clemente," he's going to say, "Well, okay. You can make money with it? Let's do it."
42:14Ron Yeah.
42:14Carleton And in my head I'm like, "That's not a precedent we can continue with." So let's decide if this is something that we could do at scale, if we do it at all, because otherwise what's the point?
42:24Ron Yeah.
42:24Carleton In this case, the point is you know these people, let's help everyone.
42:27Ron Yeah.
42:28Carleton But let's not make Capistrano— Well- … or San Clemente even, on our list of approved—
42:32Ron No, of course. Yeah, I don't want to drive up there all the time
42:34Carleton … because we are going to get more people asking for us now. Because we're going to do a good job—
42:38Ron Yeah
42:38Carleton … and then we're going to disappoint them because we're not going to come back. At some level, we're not going to be able—
42:43Ron Yeah
42:43Carleton … to be their solution. So we're going to need to maybe cultivate a relationship—
42:47Ron Referral
42:47Carleton … with someone up there that we trust. Yeah. And especially that would be the company we'd sell turf shade to. Because if we start getting jobs up there— Not for retractables because we don't make the money on retractables. If it was a solar screen or a job that they are burning turf—
43:04Ron Yeah
43:04Carleton … no one has a name for that except us.
43:07Ron Yeah.
43:07Carleton So those companies in Orange County, et cetera, are going to be the first ones outside of Screen Connection, that other business that we are helping, Bryan, who has it—
43:16Ron Yeah. I met Bryan last week
43:18Carleton … Screen Connect. I know, that's great.
43:19Ron Yeah.
43:20Carleton Screen Connection is selling our turf shade screens, and so are we. The ones we call Turf Protect, we're going to call Turf Shade—
43:27Ron Right
43:27Carleton … because we have a trademark for that now.
43:29Ron Yeah.
43:29Carleton So we're building equity into that name, and Bryan is going to be another business now selling it in the world. So there will be two screen companies that say they sell this thing called Turf Shade. That's going to make it look very legitimate. Just more than one company selling a thing—
43:46Ron Yeah
43:46Carleton … online, and it's going to be a thing you could now ask for. The turf companies will know that's the solution when you got the window burn. You got burn, get turf shade. They don't even need to say what it is.
43:57Ron Yeah.
43:57Carleton That's the point of the trademark is to fastly call it something that you could buy.
44:01Ron Okay.
44:02Carleton So they got burn, you get turf shade. They can ask what that is. "It's a window screen installed by Total Screen."
44:07Ron Yeah.
44:07Carleton That's fast.
44:09Ron Yeah.
44:09Carleton Stops the burn, stops the melt. We have so much opportunity with all these things that we've been developing for years as a screen company that others haven't and that aren't thinking in that way. You're going to get to help us capitalize on those, and there is so much opportunity with just the things we make that are window screen based, not stuff we have to buy from Mirage or Phantom. Those have a high markup and effectively low profit unless we really are dynamite salesmen. Everything else we do has a very low margin to make—
44:41Ron Yeah
44:41Carleton … or a high margin to make, low—
44:42Ron Yeah. So anything we fabricate—
44:44Carleton Like here's the math
44:45Ron … Ramona.
44:46Carleton A window screen, if we've sold it for $100, take a guess on how much of that was materials and labor to make the screen. For a screen this size, we have to quantify it, a screen this size with the solar screen.
45:00Ron Maybe like 25%? 25% of the total we sell it for?
45:01Carleton Let's see. Brett could make that screen in eight minutes. It would actually be closer to 9 to 10%.
45:15Ron Okay.
45:15Carleton Which is what we want.
45:17Ron That's perfect.
45:17Carleton That's what we want. And that's what you get in a digital services industry where it's just digitally letting someone use a website. They make 90% returns.
45:27Ron Yeah.
45:29Carleton Most people selling things won't. But just to do those steps, that was maybe less than 10%, and then the installer is maybe 10 more percent. So you see those things do add up and then the overhead of the company. But screens are so valuable to us. Much more valuable than retractables.
45:47Ron Yeah.
45:47Carleton So focus and develop screens because that's where I'm guiding this business. I am guiding this business there. Whether Geoff agrees or not, he's going to follow me because it's logical.
45:57Ron No, no, I think he— We're talking about retractables a lot … my conversations with him... Just, yeah.
46:04Carleton Yeah.
46:04Ron He's happy with what you're like—
46:07Carleton Yeah
46:08Ron … he's ready to just—
46:09Carleton And that's good
46:09Ron … let you do your thing.
46:10Carleton He could do better to tell me that.
46:13Ron Yeah.
46:14Carleton I inadvertently get compliments from people I know from Geoff because he'll be around a person I know, he'll talk me up to that person, then that person will come around and tell me, "Oh, your uncle said all these nice things about you." He's never saying them to me. You know what? He just doesn't. That's my dad, my mom—
46:34Ron It's a thing, right?
46:35Carleton When I was in high school, I built my own car.
46:38Ron Okay.
46:38Carleton Basically, my brother totaled his car.
46:40Ron Yeah.
46:41Carleton I bought a body, I pulled the engine, I did everything, right?
46:45Ron Yeah.
46:45Carleton Painted it because my dad had all the tools and everything. Stripped it down, painted it, did all the bodywork. My mom says like a month later, "Your dad's really proud of the work you did on the car." He never said one word to me.
46:58Ron I can totally see it. And it does take a little bit of the sting out of it, the premise that you would be not acknowledged by someone you'd love to hear something from.
47:07Carleton Yeah. I'm trying to give Geoff all the credit in the world for not having the way of communicating with me.
47:14Ron Yeah.
47:15Carleton It's just really, it takes a toll sometimes because if no one even knows what I do to compliment me on it, that's like a double whammy. I'm working behind the scenes so far that no one even sees—
47:24Ron Yeah
47:25Carleton … the things I'm doing.
47:27Ron No, I tell you, when I did that estimate the other night—
47:31Carleton Yeah
47:32Ron … and everything worked.
47:34Carleton I know, right? I want to give him that.
47:36Ron I was like, "What the fuck?"
47:37Carleton I'm so glad.
47:38Ron I was like, this is like—
47:39Carleton Yeah
47:40Ron … Because then I go back and I'm doing my little 300 square foot turf thing and—
47:44Carleton And you're doing—
47:45Ron … 500 square feet of rock … riding stuff And it's like a—
47:48Carleton I know
47:48Ron … perfect mind spreadsheet. Figuring out where I want to be profit-wise and where—
47:53Carleton I am—
47:53Ron … I want to have it more bread and butter.
47:55Carleton This app, I'm developing into an open source. Does that mean anything to you?
48:00Ron You had explained that before, yeah.
48:01Carleton It's available right now as an open source version that someone who runs a business could say, "Oh, okay, I can just install this." They have to know a little bit about how to do it. "I can just install this and start using it and connect it to my FreshBooks, my Nutshell, my invoicing system." It's not perfect today, but technically it exists today for any business to just start using this app. It won't be as comprehensive as this one, but it's customizable. And in the future, I'm expecting it will be a thing business owners install by default.
48:32Ron Yeah.
48:33Carleton I think it can be that useful. I don't know. I'm developing it to be that useful.
48:37Ron Yeah.
48:37Carleton Because it's useful for me right now in the company just doing my part of the jobs. I'll make messages happen with the chat and then I'll send those as a message in the... I want the future to have this digital connection—
48:49Ron Yeah
48:49Carleton … for team members.
48:49Ron I'll remember to use the—
48:51Carleton Yeah
48:51Ron … messenger more.
48:52Carleton Oh, yeah.
48:52Ron And then I use this- … thing called CamToPlan.
48:59Carleton Mm-hmm.
49:01Ron And so, I measure to double check if something's squirrely size—
49:06Carleton Yeah
49:06Ron … then I—
49:07Carleton So this is you LIDARing, or you pointing out corners with the phone—
49:10Ron So—
49:10Carleton … and getting the viable—
49:11Ron Yeah.
49:11Carleton Okay.
49:11Ron So what I would do if I'm going to create a new—
49:13Carleton Yeah
49:14Ron … like create a new— It's like a room layout for the exterior instead of the interior.
49:17Carleton Yeah. That looks really useful. But they do... So I was thinking of you. Let me see here. I'll start a new one. They have one. I couldn't get it to work.
49:30Ron Okay.
49:30Carleton I was trying the other... They have one for if you're doing windows.
49:34Ron Oh, that's useful. So—
49:35Carleton I've tried a few times so far to get really reasonable measurements for things like that from this distance, and so far they've been off by at least an inch or more. So that measurement error has been a lacking... It's like the resolution is not there yet. But I'm wondering like, yeah, for just ballpark. Well, ballpark, you're—
49:56Ron If the app could have something like this for... If I went up to a window and just boom, boom, boom.
50:01Carleton But I think you could ballpark it better than an app could.
50:04Ron Okay.
50:04Carleton The app to me, its benefit is precision. Human ballparking is what we're already doing with everything in the world. Like, okay, four by eight. What do you think?
50:14Ron Yeah.
50:14Carleton No, tell me. What do you think this is? Four by eight. We can measure it real fast.
50:18Ron Oh, this? Yeah. I'm actually going to say five by eight.
50:21Carleton Yeah. I'm going to go six by 10.
50:23Ron Okay. So six across?
50:25Carleton Yeah.
50:25Ron Okay. I don't know—
50:26Carleton I'm six feet tall, so my arm span is my... Do you know that your arm span is your height?
50:30Ron Oh, is it?
50:30Carleton I'm six feet tall. How far across would you say?
50:36Ron Four and a half?
50:36Carleton Yeah, you're about four and a half. Yeah. Okay. Four and a half, and my height is six feet—
50:40Ron Yeah
50:40Carleton … so how much extra?
50:41Ron Eight feet.
50:42Carleton We're good enough at ballpark.
50:43Ron Yeah.
50:44Carleton So I don't think that's a thing that we have to worry about.
50:46Ron Okay. All right.
50:47Carleton Because you could get that perimeter real fast there, too, if you knew the four by eight. You'd be like, "That's this place. This is whatever."
50:51Ron Yeah.
50:51Carleton Yeah, you got it. Okay. Let's see. But yeah, remember that. Your height is your arm span. Now you have a metric where you can just do quick nominal whatever values.
51:02Ron Yeah.
51:02Carleton If you were without a tape measure but you needed to know if something is bigger or taller than you, you could get it with your hands.
51:08Ron Cool. Let's see here. So this is my friend's house.
51:25Carleton Is this your work phone?
51:27Ron Yeah.
51:27Carleton Here, let me start the screen recording just so I have the reference again.
51:32Ron Okay. So trying to price the... It's a French door.
51:38Carleton Mm-hmm.
51:38Ron Double door, and then—
51:39Carleton Is it going to be a retractable or a s—
51:41Ron They're retractable. This is—
51:43Carleton That we're going to install or this is what they have?
51:45Ron This is what they have, and they want to install a new one.
51:47Carleton Okay, a new retractable.
51:49Ron This one for the other one, it's brand new because there's nothing there.
51:51Carleton Okay.
51:52Ron Yeah. Other one—
51:53Carleton This one we're taking out, this retractable?
51:54Ron No, this one works fine.
51:55Carleton Oh, okay.
51:55Ron This is an example of what—
51:57Carleton Got it
51:57Ron … we need on the other French door.
51:58Carleton Got it.
51:58Ron This one will be a rescreen.
52:00Carleton Okay.
52:01Ron And Geoff gave me a price of 250—
52:03Carleton Okay
52:03Ron … on a rescreen. But he gave me a price of 800 per screen—
52:08Carleton Okay
52:08Ron … per door. Does that seem right?
52:09Carleton Yeah. That's the bare minimum.
52:11Ron Okay.
52:11Carleton Yeah.
52:11Ron Okay.
52:12Carleton Yeah. Start it at 800 because we're going to have to, when we go to Phantom, we pay more to buy Phantoms. So we should start getting used to charging 900 for these, because in January when we switch to Phantom—
52:24Ron Yeah
52:24Carleton … it's going to cost us more to sell a retractable. So we should get used to that now.
52:28Ron Okay. Yeah, so—
52:29Carleton Oh, yeah. This is going to be— And again, no one lists their price online for these, so no one is going to be able to price check us—
52:35Ron Okay
52:35Carleton … till they get someone else to come out—
52:37Ron Yeah
52:37Carleton … and there's only so many people.
52:39Ron Okay.
52:40Carleton Are these photos in the app?
52:43Ron I have not entered my friends in the system yet.
52:47Carleton Oh, these are that one.
52:48Ron Yeah, that's my friend's.
52:48Carleton Okay, cool.
52:49Ron Yeah.
52:50Carleton Do you want to do that? Do you have all that info?
52:53Ron Yeah.
52:54Carleton Let's do it. That way it'll be another one that we're recording it, and we got all the data.
53:00Ron Oh, let's see here. Let me get their address here.
53:04Carleton And my goal with the app is always that everything can be done on the smallest version of it, the phone version. I'm trying to make it so we could do it all like a Star Trek tricorder communicator. Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop.
53:14Ron Yeah.
53:14Carleton That's my goal.
53:15Ron Well, the only thing is—
53:15Carleton If we ever have to get a new device, I've kind of failed
53:18Ron … I don't have the dimensions with me. They're at home.
53:21Carleton Have you ever texted them to anyone? Like you have a digital copy of them?
53:26Ron I don't think so.
53:26Carleton Okay.
53:28Ron Well— I think I just sat down with Jonathan there and did a verbal kind of thing with him. Oh, yeah. He was at my house.
53:33Carleton Okay.
53:33Ron Yeah.
53:34Carleton All right. Well, we can't do it then if you don't have dimensions.
53:39Ron Yeah.
53:40Carleton But if you did, we would basically upload these, maybe not the photos to the estimate generator, but once this is all in there, I would show you how to upload these photos. In fact, well, no. We can upload these photos right now. Let's open this whole screen now.
53:51Ron Yeah, I can get the address in and get it—
53:53Carleton Well, actually you don't even need the address to upload the photos. The photos are geotagged, so by default when you took the photos, it knows where they geographically were. So when we upload them, it will know that, too.
54:04Ron Oh, cool.
54:04Carleton Which is good, because then when you add an invoice to the system or an estimate to the system with the address that those geotagged photos show up for, they'll pull in and say, "I know where those are." Let's go to the Media app. It's all the way far right on that, or maybe I'm wrong. There it is. And from there you can up, Add. That's the button. And you would just do that. Just select the whole batch. Everything that's relevant to this job should be included, and you can just drag across to get them all.
54:44Ron Oops.
54:44Carleton Or actually, I'm not sure. I think go like that.
54:48Ron Oh.
54:50Carleton Yeah, those are good.
54:51Ron Okay.
54:53Carleton Do a light, quick touch instead of trying... There you go. Don't tap it first if you want to slide it, just slide. There you go And then the more you get an opportunity when you take photos, if you can, include some sort of tape measure in them, because that's our unit of measure—
55:17Ron Mm-hmm
55:17Carleton … when we're out of context.
55:18Ron Yeah.
55:19Carleton If you can. It's not going to be necessary every time, but if you were doing a corner, the tape measure up to this corner and photo of that where it's like, "Here's where the tape ends" and you know what—
55:28Ron Yeah.
55:29Carleton That would be a really useful—
55:31Ron Okay
55:31Carleton … ground truth measurement where it's like the person there recording that kind of thing. That's perfect. Yeah. That's the beginning. Do more of those because it's the data set that helps us after—
55:42Ron Yeah
55:42Carleton … the fact understand what needs to be done. It's like you can't have too many photos in my opinion. That's the whole point of this app. Collect it all so that it can be shared. And now when you upload these, you can also add a name to them and it'll add that name to every photo, so add the name of this person. That's another way to make sure that the app knows who the context is for these individual photos. And then it'll take a few minutes, maybe a minute or two, depending on the signal. I don't know that it is asynchronous, meaning I don't know if you close the app if this continues behind the scenes.
56:19Ron If it's running.
56:19Carleton I don't know. I think it is, but I don't know. So let's do this to let it run and... But I think even if you tried to upload photos at someone's home...
56:31Ron Excuse me.
56:32Carleton Yeah, right? Oh. That was your hero sip.
56:36Ron Wow.
56:40Carleton I once took a bottle— There was a person's car I was driving that had a water bottle in the center console, and I was like, "Oh, water."
56:48Ron No.
56:48Carleton It was vodka.
56:49Ron Oh. Horrifying.
56:55Carleton But it was in a water bottle.
56:56Ron That's hardcore.
56:57Carleton This person knew what they were doing.
56:58Ron That's hardcore, yeah.
56:59Carleton Yeah. Okay, some are added. That's great. Just that being added is more useful now because now I could look at them without asking you.
57:10Ron Yeah.
57:10Carleton Just the fact that you've uploaded these, now they exist for more than one person. It doesn't die on your phone. That's the use for me. It's like a relay race with everything we're doing. Take this baton.
57:22Ron Yeah.
57:23Carleton I got this data, take it to the next person.
57:24Ron If I had done that and with the measurements, like right when I had it—
57:28Carleton Yeah. Oh yeah, do that.
57:30Ron Yeah.
57:31Carleton That's a really good idea.
57:32Ron And then the pictures. Yeah.
57:33Carleton Yeah, but those pictures of the measurements will always be added when you make an estimate.
57:38Ron Oh, yeah.
57:38Carleton By default, those do carry over, but I think it's a good idea as a best practice. Take pictures of anything. There's no detriment to it.
57:45Ron Yeah.
57:45Carleton And it's nice that it's siloed off. You don't have to think about these.
57:49Ron This is not creating an estimate?
57:52Carleton It is not. It is simply making sure those photos you have now exist in the Total Screen app. So anyone else that wants to look at media, like I can go right now to the media library. Media. And I should be able to see if you've added new photos. Nope, those are from Troy. Maybe it's all. Yeah. So now I can see and understand. And it's not perfect yet, it looks like these are low resolution, but that's because I didn't tell this app to switch—
58:22Ron Yeah
58:22Carleton … to a high-resolution mode, but they're there. So this is all available now, and there's a thing, I'm going to show you the premise. I'm adding a section to the Total Screen app, it's called Projects. This is where eventually things will go. I think this is the one we just made, right?
58:37Ron That's me, yeah.
58:37Carleton So I don't think there's anything there yet media-wise. I don't think we uploaded anything.
58:42Ron No.
58:42Carleton Or maybe we did. Maybe there's that photo. "Photos from this address." Well, technically, if we'd uploaded photos to this job, that section in Projects—
58:58Ron Oh, that's the San Juan Capistrano job.
59:03Carleton Oh, okay. I wonder why it's listing it for that address. Maybe it thinks you are that person. Oh, it finished.
59:10Ron That's where I took the picture.
59:11Carleton Oh, so that's how accurate this is then.
59:14Ron Yeah.
59:14Carleton It said, "I knew your address, and I knew this," so that's why in that context... So now we have proof of concept.
59:20Ron Yeah.
59:20Carleton It definitely geotags correctly. Apparently, you were 24 meters from the address when you took that.
59:27Ron Yeah, it's in my living room or in my dining room.
59:30Carleton So, at least we have premise that this works.
59:34Ron Yeah.
59:34Carleton Uploading everything you can to this is a good idea. I'll add a new section here where it says Sketches that says Handwritten Notes, and it'll look at the content and then tag them accordingly. Because that's another benefit is we don't need to tell it what it is. It can analyze the stuff and say—
59:48Ron Yeah
59:48Carleton … "Oh, I know what that picture is." Okay. I learned a lot just today about how to fix things in the app. Is there something that you still want to review that's been a troublesome point with the app?
1:00:01Ron No, I think my experience after actually creating an estimate—
1:00:08Carleton Okay. Yeah
1:00:09Ron … that helped. Yeah, the two, I mean—
1:00:11Carleton Do you want to do another fake one? Just to get that muscle memory, because that matters.
1:00:14Ron Yeah.
1:00:14Carleton The more you do a task quickly, the more it just settles in your brain and you know how to do it without effort.
1:00:20Ron No, I think I'm good.
1:00:21Carleton Okay.
1:00:22Ron Yeah.
1:00:22Carleton Let's stop the screen recording. I'll show you. Just press that little red dot there, and then that one more time. Cool. Same thing over there.
